Planning a Summer Maternity Session

If you’re expecting your baby this year and thinking about maternity photos, first of all—congratulations. This is such a personal and important chapter, and capturing it in a way that feels true to you matters more than anything else. Planning a summer maternity session might sound like a lot when you’re already juggling so much, but with the right mindset and preparation, it can be a really special and relaxed experience.

Summer is a popular time for maternity sessions, and for good reason. The light stays longer, everything feels a little more alive, and being outside just feels easier. But I also know summer can be a lot, especially if you’re pregnant. The heat, the swelling, the general feeling of being very done by the end of the day—it’s all real. That’s why planning your session around comfort, connection, and calm is key.

Timing is everything

Most maternity sessions happen somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks. At that point, your belly is showing beautifully, but you’re usually still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the process. Everyone’s experience is different though, so don’t feel like there’s only one “right” time. If you’re not sure when would be best for you, it’s always okay to ask for guidance.

When it comes to the time of day, summer evenings are ideal. The sun is lower, the air is cooler, and the light is softer. That golden hour glow can add so much warmth to your photos without needing to do much at all.

What to wear (and what to skip)

You don’t need to go out and buy a bunch of new clothes. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and like yourself. Flowy dresses and breathable fabrics tend to photograph well and are easy to move in. Soft colors and simple textures often work best with natural light, but there’s no one-size-fits-all. If you’re unsure what works on camera, your photographer can usually help talk through ideas or offer suggestions.

Shoes are another thing to think about, especially if you’ll be outside. Choose something easy to walk in. Even if they don’t make it into the photos, your comfort always comes first.

Choosing a location

The right location isn’t always about the most scenic spot. It’s about what feels good to you. That could be a quiet field, a shaded forest trail, or even your own home. A good photographer will help you choose a location that matches your style and gives you space to relax. Privacy and comfort go a long way in helping you feel present and at ease.

Bring water, snacks, and give yourself grace

Pregnancy isn’t predictable. Some days are easier than others, and that’s completely normal. Bring water, pack a snack, and don’t stress if you’re not feeling your absolute best. Maternity sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection and about honoring this moment in time. You won’t be expected to know what to do in front of the camera. You’ll be gently guided through the session so you can stay focused on just being there.

This is for you

Maternity photos are more than just a way to remember how you looked. They’re a chance to hold onto the way you felt. The waiting. The growth. The quiet strength. And the love that was already growing before your baby even arrived.

If planning a summer maternity session is something you’re thinking about, take a moment to find a photographer who makes you feel safe, heard, and seen. When you feel supported, everything else tends to fall into place.
